Hi guys and welcome to the 38th addition of TV Rewind. For those of you who don’t know what TV Rewind is about its pretty simple. TV Rewind is where we take a look back at some of the great shows that we used to watch (are maybe still watch) when we were younger. This week is no different. This week we are taken a look back at one of the best loved comedy show that has ever been on TV, it is M.A.S.H.

M.A.S.H. stared life out as a black comedy film first released in 1970 and depicted the horrors of the Korean war. It also dealt with the doctors that were charged with keeping the men alive and how they dealt with the whole situation. It stared Donald Sutherland as Hawkeye, Sally Kellerman as Hotlips and Gary Burghoff as Radar. Burghoff was the only person from the movie to come back for the show. In 1972 M.A.S.H first aired with Alan Alda as Hawkeye Loretta Swit as Hotlips and Gary Burghoff as Radar. The first season found it difficult to find its audience and was in fear of being cancelled, but unconfirmed say that the wife of the head of the studio loved the show so it was giving a second season. It was also moved to a better time slot which did the trick and the show quickly broke into the the top 20 watched show on TV where it stayed for its 11 year run.

M.A.S.H. stand for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. It generally operated close to the front line in many cases as little as 5 to 10 miles away. This was so that the casualties would get seen by the doctors faster and had a better chance of serving. For the sergeants it was a never ended converabelt of wounded people that needed fixing and the show delt with this showing the doctors working long shifts with limited supplies doing what ever they could to save lives. They managed to have hummer in the OR but it was when they were out of the OR that they were able to let there hair down and try and forget about where they were. They did this by drinking having relations with the nurses and pulling pranks on each other. Hawkeye was the main character of the show even though he didn’t start out that way, Alda just stole the spot light and made everyone fall in love with him.

The main target of Hawkeye was Major Burns and Major Houlihan (Hotlips). Burns and Hotleips wanted everyone to act like they were in the army but unlucky for them most of the doctors and nurses were drafted so they were just civilians put into a bad situation and they were trying to be as normal as possible in an extra-oderdany place. Whit this in mind you can see why the show has got 2 episodes in the TV Guid’s top 100 greatest episodes of all time. It was also ranked the 5th best show ever written in 2013 by the writers guild of America. Over all this was a brilliant show. I have to confess I didn’t start watching it till a few years ago but I am glad I did because the mix of comedy and drama is near perfect and it just is an entertaining show to watch.
